Side Artist Agreements
A side artist agreement is a legal contract between a primary artist (often referred to as the main artist or featured artist) and a secondary or “side” artist who contributes to a musical recording or performance. This agreement outlines the terms and conditions of the collaboration between the main artist and the side artist, including but not limited to compensation, credit, royalties, ownership of intellectual property, and any other relevant rights and responsibilities.
So when Drake appeared on the “Versace” remix by The Migos, Quality Control, The Migos record label, had to get Drake to sign a side artist agreement. The same for Drake and OVO/Universal, they had to get J. Cole tosign a side artist agreement for his performance on “First Person Shooter”.
In the music industry, side artists might include session musicians, backing vocalists, instrumentalists, or producers who contribute to a recording or live performance but are not the primary focus of the project. The side artist agreement ensures that all parties involved understand their roles and obligations and provides legal protection for their contributions.
